The cheapest way to make a kitchen look newer is the hardware. New pulls, soft-close hinges and drawers that glide shut change how a kitchen feels every day. So does replacing old exposed hinges.
Knobs and pulls
Swapping knobs and pulls across a kitchen is quick when the new ones fit the old holes. Pulls are measured by the distance between their screw holes, and the common sizes are 3 inches, 96 millimeters and 128 millimeters. A pull with a different spacing means filling the old holes and drilling new ones, which we do, with the fills touched up so they don't show. A kitchen with knobs going to pulls needs new holes on every door, and a jig keeps them all in the same spot.
Soft-close hinges
Most concealed hinges can be swapped for soft-close hinges that fit the same holes in the door and the same plate in the cabinet. The door closes the last inch on its own, quietly. Some hinges take an add-on damper instead, a small piston that clips onto the existing hinge. We'll tell you which your doors can take.
Soft-close drawers
Drawers need slides with soft-close built in, so it's a slide swap rather than an add-on. Undermount soft-close slides are the quietest and hide under the drawer, but they need a drawer box sized for them. Side-mount soft-close slides fit most existing drawers.

Questions
- Can you make my cabinets soft-close?
- Usually, yes. Doors get soft-close hinges that fit the existing holes, or add-on dampers. Drawers need slides with soft-close built in, so it's a slide swap.
- Will new pulls fit my old holes?
- If the hole spacing matches, yes. If not, the old holes get filled and touched up and new ones drilled with a jig so they line up.
