Crooked doors, hinges pulling out of the box, shelves that sag. Adjusted, rebuilt or replaced.

A cabinet door that hangs crooked or won't close isn't broken. It's out of adjustment, or the screws holding the hinge have stripped out of the particleboard.

Adjusting doors

Most kitchen cabinets built in the last few decades use concealed European-style hinges. A round cup sits in a hole drilled into the back of the door, and an arm clips onto a plate screwed inside the cabinet. Each hinge has small screws that move the door up and down, side to side, and in and out. When a door hangs crooked, rubs its neighbor, or won't close flat, the fix is often a few turns of those screws on every hinge along the run, so all the gaps line up again.

Stripped hinge screws

When adjusting doesn't hold, the screws have stripped out. Most cabinet boxes are particleboard, which holds a screw well the first time and poorly after that. A longer screw just strips the next layer. We rebuild the hole with glue and hardwood, or cover it with a repair plate that spreads the load over solid material. Then the hinge goes back on and holds. Worn or broken hinges get replaced with matching ones, and a photo of the hinge arm usually shows the maker's name.

Shelves

Long particleboard shelves loaded with dishes bend a little more every year. A sagging shelf can be flipped, given a center support, or replaced with a stiffer one cut to the same size. Shelf pins that have pulled out of their holes get the holes rebuilt or the shelf moved to fresh holes.

Doors and drawer fronts beyond saving

A door that's cracked, warped, or has a hinge cup torn out of it gets replaced. Matching a replacement door to a kitchen that's a decade old is the hard part. Many cabinet lines are still made, and a photo of the door and any label inside the cabinet helps find it. When the exact door isn't available, a close match on the least visible cabinet, with the original door moved to where it shows, works well.

Toe kicks, fillers and trim

The toe kick along the floor gets kicked and wet, and it's a flat panel that's easy to replace. Filler strips between cabinets and walls come loose. Crown and light rail on top of the cabinets pull away. All of it refastens or replaces to match.

Questions

My cabinet door hangs crooked. Do I need a new hinge?
Probably not. The hinge has adjustment screws, and a few turns usually squares the door. If the screws have stripped out of the box, the hole gets rebuilt and the same hinge goes back on.
Can you find a matching door for my cabinets?
Often. Send a photo of the door and of any label inside a cabinet. If the exact door isn't made anymore, a close match goes where it shows least.
Can you fix cabinet doors that bang shut?
Yes. Most concealed hinges can be swapped for soft-close hinges that fit the same holes, or given a small add-on damper, so the door closes the last inch on its own, quietly.
