Sealing Your House Against Scorpions, Dust and Pests in Phoenix

Scorpions come through gaps you can't see. Dust comes through the ones you can. We find and seal both.

A bark scorpion can get through a gap the thickness of a credit card. Most Phoenix houses have dozens of those: under the doors, around pipes, at a worn garage door bottom seal, where the block meets the frame. Sealing them is what a pest company means by "exclusion," and it's carpentry and caulking, not chemicals. The same work keeps out dust, hot air and the smaller bugs.

Where they get in

  • Under exterior doors with a worn sweep or no threshold seal
  • Around the garage door, especially the bottom corners
  • Where pipes and AC lines come through the wall
  • Weep holes and gaps in the block
  • Around windows where the caulk has failed
  • Attic access hatches and vents without screen
  • Expansion joints in the slab and where the patio meets the house

What we do

A walk around the house, inside and out, with a flashlight, looking for daylight and gaps. Then: door sweeps and weatherstripping replaced, garage door seals and corner pads, pipe and line penetrations foamed and caulked, weep holes screened, window and door frames recaulked, attic hatches sealed, vents screened. Where a gap is in the stucco or block, it gets patched. Dust and hot air stop coming in at the same time, which often shows on the window sills and the power bill.

Questions

Will sealing stop scorpions completely?
It cuts the entry points way down, and it's the first thing a pest company asks for. Combined with treatment and keeping debris away from the house, it's as close as it gets.
Does this help with dust?
Yes. The same gaps that let scorpions in let dust and hot air in. Sealed houses are noticeably cleaner after a dust storm.
