Regrouting

Grout that's crumbling, cracked or missing gets ground out and replaced. The old grout comes out with an oscillating tool or a grout saw, down to a depth that gives the new grout something to hold. The joints get vacuumed clean, new grout goes in, and it's tooled flush and cleaned. Then it cures for a day before it's sealed.

Grout can be regrouted in the same color, or a different one. A lighter grout brightens a dark floor. A darker grout hides dirt on a kitchen floor. We bring samples.

Grout that's sound but stained

Grout that's firm but dark, blotchy or discolored doesn't need to come out. It gets cleaned and recolored with a grout colorant. The colorant is a paint-like sealer that bonds to the grout, evens out the color, and seals it against stains at the same time. On a floor with hundreds of feet of grout lines, recoloring makes the whole floor look new.

Grout in showers

Shower grout is the grout that fails first. It's wet every day, it gets the harshest cleaners, and it's on a wall where water runs across it. Crumbling or missing grout in a shower is worth fixing quickly. Grout isn't waterproof on its own, but missing grout lets far more water reach the wall behind the tile.

If the wall behind the tile has already gone soft, regrouting won't fix it. The tile and the backing have to come off, and at that point it's a shower rebuild, which we do. We'll tell you which one your shower needs. Tap the tiles: hollow tiles on a wall that flexes mean the wall, not the grout.

Caulk at the corners

The joint where a shower wall meets the floor, or where a tub meets the tile, should be caulk, not grout. Grout there cracks because the two surfaces move differently. We cut out the cracked grout or old caulk in those corners and run a bead of mold-resistant silicone. We also do recaulking on its own.

Sealing

Cement grout is porous, and sealing it slows down staining. A sealed floor wipes clean. An unsealed one holds the stain. New grout gets sealed after it cures, and old grout can be cleaned and resealed on its own. Sealer wears off, so a kitchen floor is worth resealing every couple of years.
