Iron gates and fences last for decades in Phoenix when the rust is kept in check. We repair the iron and repaint it.
Rust
Iron rusts first at the welds, at the bottom rail where water sits, and anywhere the paint has been chipped. Surface rust gets wire-brushed off, primed with a rust-inhibiting primer, and painted. Rust that's eaten through a rail or a picket needs that piece cut out and replaced before paint. A gate that's been rusting for years at the bottom rail usually needs a new bottom rail.
Broken welds and bent rails
A gate that's been hit by a car, or that's been swinging on a broken hinge, breaks at the welds. Broken welds get rewelded. A rail that's bent gets straightened or replaced. A gate that's been patched with wire or a bolt-on bracket gets the proper repair so it holds.
Hinges and latches
Iron gates hang on weld-on or bolt-on hinges, and a sagging iron gate is usually a worn hinge pin or a loose hinge weld. New hinges with grease fittings, or adjustable hinges that let the gate be realigned, fix it. Latches get replaced with the same type, or upgraded to a lockable latch or a keypad lock on a driveway gate.
Painting
Iron gets painted after any repair, with a rust-inhibiting primer on bare metal and an exterior enamel over it. A gate in direct sun fades, and repainting the whole gate usually looks better than touching up the repair. Powder coating lasts longer than paint, and a gate that comes off for a weld repair can be powder coated at the same time.

Questions
- Can you fix rust without replacing the gate?
- If the rust is on the surface, yes: wire brush, primer, paint. If a rail has rusted through, that rail gets replaced and the gate stays.
