An interior door that won't latch, or that rubs the frame at the top, isn't broken. It's out of line, and that happens to most houses as they settle. Many of these are fixed with the right screw in the right place. A door that's cracked, has a hole in it, or has been painted shut a dozen times gets replaced to match the others.
Why doors stick and won't latch at the strike plate
A door hangs from its top hinge. The screws in that hinge carry the weight of the door, and over the years they loosen, or they only reach into the thin jamb and never into the framing behind it. The door drops at the latch side. It starts rubbing the frame at the top corner, and the latch slides past the strike plate instead of catching.
The fix is often one long screw driven through the top hinge into the wall framing. It pulls the door back up into line. If the gaps around the door aren't even, the frame has moved as the house settled, and the fix is moving the strike plate, shimming a hinge, or planing a tight edge. None of that means a new door.
A door that only sticks in monsoon season is swelling with the humidity, usually because its top or bottom edge was never painted or sealed. Planing it and sealing the raw edge keeps it from happening again.
Doors that swing open or shut on their own
A door that drifts is hanging out of plumb. The usual trick is to take out a hinge pin, bend it slightly, and put it back. The extra friction holds the door where you leave it. If the frame is badly out, the hinges get shimmed instead.
Holes, cracks and damage
Most interior doors in Phoenix homes are hollow-core: two thin skins over a cardboard honeycomb. A doorknob, a foot or a dog can put a hole through one. Small holes can be patched and painted, and on a textured door it blends in. A big hole or a split skin means a new door, because a patch that size shows.
A new door gets matched to the others in the house by style, and we hang it on the existing frame with the hinge and latch cut to fit. Solid-core doors are available where you want more sound blocking, like a bedroom or office.
Knobs, levers and privacy locks
Knobs and levers wear out, and privacy locks on bathroom doors stop working. Swapping them is quick, and most fit the same holes. Changing the whole house to matching levers is a common job. Round knobs that are hard for someone to grip swap to levers too.

Questions
- My door rubs at the top corner. Do I need a new door?
- Usually not. The top hinge has loosened and the door has dropped. One long screw into the framing usually fixes it. If not, the strike plate moves or the tight edge gets planed.
- Can you match my existing doors?
- Usually. Most Phoenix homes use a handful of common panel styles, and those are still sold. Send a photo of one of your doors and we'll find the match.
- My pocket door fell off the track. Can it be fixed without opening the wall?
- Often. Most pocket door rollers can be reached by removing the trim at the top of the opening. If the track itself is broken inside the wall, that's a bigger job.
- How long does it take to rehang a door?
- A door that's come off its hinges or needs the hinges reset is usually under an hour. A new slab hung on the old frame, with hinges and latch cut to fit, is a couple of hours. A pre-hung door with a new frame is most of a morning.
