Bathroom Exhaust Fan Replacement and Venting in Phoenix

The fan that rattles, the one that does nothing, the bathroom with no fan at all. Replaced, vented outside, and quiet.

Arizona ROC #366903 · Licensed, Bonded & Insured

A bathroom fan that doesn't move air leaves moisture on the walls and mold in the grout. Most old fans are loud and weak. New ones are quiet and actually clear the room. We replace fans in the existing opening, add a fan where there's none, and make sure it vents outside, not into the attic.

Replacing a fan

Most fans mount in a box between the ceiling joists. A new fan goes in the same opening or a slightly larger one, wired to the existing switch, with the duct reconnected. Fan-light and fan-light-heater combos fit the same way. The new fan should be sized for the room and rated quiet.

Venting

A fan that vents into the attic dumps moisture there. Code wants it ducted outside, through the roof or a wall. We run the duct and install the roof or wall cap. Roof caps go in through the roofing on a tile or shingle roof, and we can help with a flat roof too.

Adding a fan

A bathroom with no fan gets one wired to a new switch or the light switch, with a duct out. That's an added circuit load and a permit in most cities.

Timer switches

A timer switch runs the fan for twenty minutes after a shower and shuts it off. Quick swap, and it's the thing that makes a fan actually get used.

Questions

My fan runs but the mirror still fogs. Why?
Usually the duct is disconnected or crushed, or the fan is too weak for the room. A new fan with a clear duct fixes both.
Does the fan have to vent outside?
Yes. Into the attic is against code and can cause mold on the insulation.
Why are there mold spots on the bathroom ceiling?
Moisture the fan isn't clearing. A fan that doesn't move air, usually from a disconnected or crushed duct or a fan too weak for the room, leaves the moisture behind, and a new fan with a clear duct vented outside fixes it.
