Dimmers that buzz, switches that crackle, and smart switches that need a neutral wire. Swapped and working.

A switch is a part that wears out. After thousands of flips the contacts inside pit and burn, and the switch gets loose, crackles, or works only when you hold it. A dimmer that buzzes or flickers is usually the wrong dimmer for the bulbs. We replace switches, dimmers and three-way sets, and install smart switches on circuits that can take them.

Switches that crackle, stick or feel warm

A crackle when you flip a switch is arcing inside it. That's heat, and it's the switch telling you it's done. A switch that feels warm is carrying more current than it should, or it's loose on its wires. Both get replaced. A switch that's loose in the wall is usually a loose box or stripped screws, and that gets fixed at the same time.

Old homes often have switches with no ground and wiring with cloth insulation. We work with what's there and tell you when it's beyond a switch.

Dimmers and LED bulbs

Most buzzing, flickering and lights that won't dim all the way come from mixing an old dimmer with LED bulbs. The old dimmer was built for incandescent bulbs and doesn't play well with LEDs. The fix is a dimmer rated for LEDs, and bulbs that are marked dimmable. Even then, some bulb and dimmer pairs don't get along, and the bulbs may need to change.

Dimmers also have a wattage limit. A big chandelier or a long run of recessed lights can be more than one dimmer is rated for, and that's when a dimmer overheats. We check the load against the dimmer.

Three-way switches

A light with two switches, one at each end of a hallway or at the top and bottom of stairs, is a three-way circuit. When one switch stops working, or the light only works from one end, a switch has failed or someone replaced one with the wrong type. Three-ways are the switches people most often wire wrong themselves. We sort out which wire goes where and put in matching switches, or a matching dimmer set.

Smart switches

A smart switch replaces a wall switch and connects to your phone or voice assistant. Most of them need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many Phoenix homes built before the late 1980s don't have one there. Some smart switches work without a neutral, and we'll tell you which kind your box can take before you buy. A smart switch on a three-way circuit needs a matching companion switch at the other end.

Smart dimmers follow the same rules as any dimmer: LED-rated, and matched to the bulbs.

Timers, motion sensors and fan controls

A timer switch on the bathroom fan or the porch light, a motion sensor in the garage or laundry room, and a fan speed control are all switch swaps. Fan controls matter: a ceiling fan on a light dimmer hums and burns out.

How it starts

Send a photo of the switch with the cover plate off if you're comfortable taking it off, or with it on if not. Tell us what the switch does and doesn't do, and what bulbs are on it. You'll have a fixed price before anyone shows up. We can install switches you've already bought. Levi does the work himself.

Questions

Why does my dimmer buzz or flicker?
Usually the bulbs. An old dimmer with LED bulbs buzzes and flickers. An LED-rated dimmer with bulbs marked dimmable fixes it most of the time. Now and then a bulb and dimmer still don't get along, and the bulbs change.
Will a smart switch work in my house?
If the switch box has a neutral wire, almost any smart switch works. If it doesn't, you need a no-neutral smart switch, and the choices are fewer. Send a photo of the wires in the box and we'll tell you.
Can you replace all my switches and plates to match?
Yes. Swapping a whole house to matching white or black switches and plates is a cheap way to make an older house look updated.
