Security, Storm and Pet Doors in Phoenix

A door you can leave open for air, and a flap the dog can use. Hung square, latching, sealed against the heat.

A security door means you can leave the front door open on a winter morning. A pet door means nobody has to get up at 6 a.m. Both go in in an afternoon, and both go wrong when they're hung out of square, which is most of what we fix.

Security doors, locks and latches

A security door is a steel or iron screen door with a lock, hung outside the entry door. It lets you open the front door for air with the house still locked. Most Valley security doors are made to a standard size and come pre-hung in their own frame. Installing one means anchoring that frame to the house and setting it so it closes square and latches.

Security doors also take sun, and a cheap painted one rusts at the welds and bottom rail. Powder-coated doors last longer. A rusted door gets wire-brushed, primed and painted, or replaced if the rust has gone through.

Storm doors

A storm door is the glass-and-screen door that goes outside an entry door, with glass and screen panels that swap by season. They're less common in Phoenix than back east, but they're useful on a shaded front door where you want the light without the bugs. They install the same way a security door does.

Pet doors

A pet door can go in an exterior door, a wall, or a sliding glass door panel. The door-mounted kind is the simplest: a hole cut in the door, a frame installed, and a flap. The wall-mounted kind needs a tunnel through the stucco and framing. The sliding-door kind is a panel that sits in the track beside the glass door with a pet door built in, and it goes in without cutting anything.

Pick the size by the pet's shoulder height and width, and get one with a locking cover for when you want it closed. A pet door on a hot west wall should have a good seal, or it leaks heat all summer.

How it starts

Send a photo of the door or opening. For a security or storm door, a photo of the front door from outside with a tape measure across the opening helps. For a pet door, tell us the pet's weight and where you want it. Fixed price up front, no surprises on the bill. We can install a door you've already bought. Levi is on the job.

Questions

Will a pet door let the heat in?
A good one, no. Look for a double-flap or magnetic-seal door, and keep the locking cover on when the pet's inside. A cheap single-flap door on a sunny wall leaks noticeably.
Do you install security doors from the big box stores?
Yes. Measure the opening before you buy, or send a photo with a tape measure across it and we'll tell you which size.
