Closets

The builder closet, one rod and one shelf, wastes most of the space. A double-hung rod doubles the hanging space in a kids' closet. Shelves above the rod, shelves down one side, and a shoe shelf at the bottom turn a reach-in closet into something useful. We build closet systems from wood or melamine, anchored to the studs so a full rod of clothes doesn't pull them off the wall. Wire shelving that's sagging or pulled out of the drywall gets replaced with the same or with solid shelves.

Pantries

Pantry shelves carry more weight than people think: canned goods, small appliances, bulk bags. Wire shelves bow under it and small things fall through. Solid shelves, 12 to 16 inches deep, with a lip or a cleat at the back, hold everything and wipe clean. Adjustable shelf standards let you change the spacing later.

Garage storage

Garage shelving goes on the wall, off the floor, so the floor stays open for cars and bikes. Heavy-duty shelves anchored into the studs, or into the block on a block wall, hold bins, tools and paint. Overhead racks use the space above the garage door. A workbench with shelves under it is usually a quick build. Garages in Phoenix get hot, so anything that can't take heat belongs inside.

Laundry rooms and mudrooms

A counter over the washer and dryer gives you a folding surface and hides the gap between them. Shelves or cabinets above the counter hold detergent. A bench with hooks above it and cubbies below makes a mudroom out of the hallway by the garage door.

Built-ins

A bookcase built to the wall, a window seat with storage under it, a desk in a nook, a bench in a bay window: these are the small built-ins that make a room look designed. They're built in place or in the shop, anchored to the wall, trimmed to match the room, and painted. We keep to furniture-sized pieces.

Anchoring

Everything we hang goes into studs, into blocking added behind the drywall, or into masonry anchors on block. Drywall anchors alone don't hold a loaded shelf, and a shelf that pulls out of the wall takes the drywall with it. Tall bookcases get anchored at the top so they can't tip, which matters in a house with kids.
