Aging-in-Place Repairs in Phoenix

Grab bars, handrails, lever handles, a handheld shower, a taller toilet. The small changes that let someone stay in their own house.

Most of what makes a house hard to live in as you get older is small and fixable: a step with no rail, a tub with nothing to hold, round doorknobs that are hard to grip, a toilet that's too low. We do these as one list, often in a visit or two, and we anchor everything to hold full body weight. Replacing the smoke detectors can go on the same list.

Grab bars

A grab bar in the shower, by the tub and next to the toilet gets pulled on suddenly with a person's full weight. It has to go into a stud, into blocking added behind the wall, or into an anchor made and rated for grab bars. A grab bar on drywall anchors fails the first time it's needed. On a tile wall the holes get drilled with a bit that doesn't crack the tile, and the bar gets sealed so water stays out. We'll stand in the shower with you to set them where your hand naturally goes.

Bathrooms

A handheld shower on a slide bar lets someone shower seated. A comfort-height toilet, 17 to 19 inches, is easier to stand up from. A tub that's become a barrier can be converted to a walk-in shower, which is a bathroom remodel we also do. Lever faucet handles replace knobs that arthritis can't turn.

Doors and handles

Lever handles replace round knobs on every door. Thresholds that catch a walker or a wheelchair get lowered or ramped. A door that's too narrow for a wheelchair can sometimes gain two inches with offset hinges. Widening the doorway itself is a remodel project.

Steps, rails and lighting

A handrail at the front step, the garage step and anywhere there's a change in level, anchored into framing or block. Motion-sensor lights in the hallway and bathroom for night trips. Brighter bulbs where the light is dim. A ramp at the entry where one or two steps are the problem is a remodel project.

Kitchens

Pull-out shelves in base cabinets so nothing needs bending for. D-shaped pulls that don't need a grip. A faucet with a lever or a touch control.

Questions

Can you put a grab bar on a tile wall?
Yes. The holes get drilled through the tile without cracking it, the bar goes into a stud or a rated anchor, and it's sealed.
Does Medicare pay for this?
Usually not for home modifications. Some long-term care policies and veterans' programs do. We can write the quote the way a program asks for it.
Can you make the shower safe without a remodel?
Often. Grab bars, a handheld shower, a seat and a non-slip surface go a long way. When the tub itself is the barrier, a tub-to-shower conversion is the next step.
