A dripping faucet wastes water all day and gets worse on its own. In Phoenix, most faucet problems come from the same place: hard water. The minerals in it wear out the parts inside and coat the parts outside. Some faucets are worth repairing. Many are worth replacing, and the new one can often go in during the same visit.

Why faucets drip here

Inside most faucets is a cartridge. It's the part the handle turns, and it has rubber seals that stop the water when the handle is off. Hard water leaves scale on the cartridge and the seals. The handle gets stiff, then the seals stop closing all the way, and the drip starts. Scale also builds inside the spout and on the aerator, the little screen at the tip, which is why the flow drops over the years.

The aerator can be unscrewed and cleaned, and it fixes low flow more often than people expect. Inside the faucet, the worn cartridge is replaced rather than cleaned. Most faucets from the big brands have replacement cartridges available, and some brands send them free.

Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when the faucet is a good brand, the finish is still fine, and the only problem is a drip or a stiff handle. A new cartridge and seals bring it back.

Replace it when:

  • The finish is pitted, flaking or green around the base
  • It's a builder-grade faucet, where the cartridge costs almost as much as a new faucet
  • It leaks from the base of the spout or under the sink, not just the tip
  • The brand is unknown and no cartridge can be found
  • You want a different style, such as a pull-down kitchen faucet

Picking a faucet that fits

The sink or counter decides which faucets fit, not the other way around. Look at the holes:

  • One hole: a single-handle faucet, or one that comes with a deck plate to cover extra holes.
  • Three holes close together: a bathroom centerset faucet, with the outer holes 4 inches apart.
  • Three holes spread out: a widespread faucet, with the outer holes 8 inches apart. Handles and spout are separate pieces.
  • Kitchen sinks often have one to four holes. A pull-down faucet usually takes one, and a deck plate covers the rest.

If you're buying the faucet yourself, send a photo of the sink from above before it ships. We'll tell you whether it fits the holes you have, and whether a deck plate is needed. A faucet that's taller or reaches further than the old one can also hit a window sill or a backsplash shelf, so a side photo helps too.

What a faucet replacement includes

The old faucet comes off from underneath. On an older faucet, the nuts are often corroded in place and take some work. The sink deck gets cleaned of old putty and scale. The new faucet goes on with new supply lines, because old ones are usually brittle by now. If the shutoff valves under the sink are seized or dripping, they get replaced with quarter-turn valves at the same time. Then everything is tested for leaks with the cabinet doors open.

Kitchen pull-down faucets have a weight on the hose under the sink. It needs clear space to move, so a garbage disposal or a filter system crowded against it can keep the spray head from pulling back. We route it so it works.

Laundry, bar and outdoor faucets

Laundry faucets and the hot and cold valves behind a washer get the same treatment. Bar sink and prep sink faucets are small versions of a kitchen faucet, and we fix outdoor faucets too.

How it starts

Send a photo of the faucet, one of the sink from above, and one of the space under the sink. Tell us what it's doing: dripping, stiff, leaking underneath, or just old. You'll have a fixed price before anyone shows up. We can install a faucet you've already bought. Levi does the work himself.

Questions

My faucet handle is hard to turn. Is that a problem?
It's scale on the cartridge, and it's the stage before a drip. A new cartridge fixes both. Forcing a stiff handle can crack the cartridge and turn a drip into a steady leak.
Can you install a faucet I bought online?
Yes. Before it ships, send a photo of the sink and counter from above. We'll tell you whether it fits the holes you have.
Why is the water pressure low at one faucet only?
Usually the aerator at the tip is clogged with scale. Unscrew it and look. If it's clean and the flow is still weak, the cartridge or the supply line is the next place to check.
Why is there green or white crust around the base of my faucet?
White crust is dried hard-water minerals. Green means the water has been sitting against the metal for a while, often from a slow leak at the base. White cleans off. Green usually means the faucet is worn and worth replacing.
Why won't my pull-down sprayer retract?
The weight on the hose under the sink is probably hung up on the disposal or a filter. Clearing a path for it usually fixes it. Same story on Grohe, Moen and Delta.
Why does my sprayer head sputter or spray sideways?
Hard-water scale is clogging the spray holes. Soaking the head in white vinegar overnight clears a lot of it, and if the holes stay clogged, the sprayer gets replaced.
Can you fix a stopper that won't stay up or down?
Yes. We repair pop-up stoppers, and when the stopper or the drain assembly is worn out, we replace it.
