Trim takes a beating. Baseboards get hit by vacuums, chairs and mop water. Door casing splits when a door gets slammed or the house settles. Crown molding pulls apart at the corners as the wood shrinks in the dry air. All of it is replaceable, and the trick is matching what's there so the new piece is hard to spot.

Matching the profile

Trim comes in hundreds of profiles, but most Phoenix homes use a handful of common ones, and those are still sold. A short piece cut from the old trim, or a clear photo of its end, is usually enough to find the match. When an older profile isn't made anymore, the closest stock profile goes in at a natural break, such as an inside corner or a door, where the change doesn't show.

Painted trim is easier to match than stained. Paint hides small differences in wood and profile. Stain shows every change in species and grain, so on stained trim it's better to replace a whole wall's run than one piece.

Baseboards

Water-stained baseboard, usually in a bathroom, a laundry room or near a pet bowl, swells at the bottom and the paint bubbles. Kicked baseboard dents and splits. Both get cut out at the nearest joint or corner and replaced. If the drywall behind it is damaged too, we fix that as well.

New flooring often leaves a gap under the baseboard, where the new floor sits lower than the old one. A shoe molding or quarter-round along the bottom covers it without pulling the baseboard off. We often finish the job when a floor installer pulls the baseboard and doesn't put it back.

Casing

Door and window casing cracks at the mitered corners when the frame moves, and splits when a door slams. A cracked casing gets replaced on that side, matched to the others. A whole-house casing replacement, when someone wants to upgrade from flat builder trim to something with a profile, is a bigger job we quote room by room.

Crown molding

Crown opens at the corners because wood shrinks and swells with the air around it, and Phoenix air swings from very dry to humid in monsoon season. Small gaps get filled and caulked. Corners that keep opening get glued and pinned so the two pieces move together. Crown that was never installed right, with the corners cut at the wrong angle, gets recut.

Adding crown to a room that has none is a common job. Rooms with vaulted ceilings or rounded bullnose corners take more care, and the quote reflects it.

Accent walls and mantels

Shiplap, board-and-batten and wainscoting are trim projects, not remodels. A wall gets laid out, the boards or panels go up over the drywall into the studs, and the whole thing gets caulked and painted. One wall in a bedroom or behind a dining table is a day or two. A wood mantel that's loose gets re-anchored into the framing behind it. A new mantel or a new surround around a fireplace gets built to the opening and finished to match the room.

Finishing

New and repaired trim gets filled, caulked where it meets the wall, and painted. The caulk line is what makes trim look finished; without it there's a shadow line at every edge. We also paint trim on its own.

Questions

Can you match my existing trim?
Usually. Most Phoenix homes use common profiles that are still sold. Send a photo of the end of a piece and we'll find it.
Why does my crown molding open at the corners every summer?
Wood shrinks in dry air and swells in humid air, and the corners show it. Gluing and pinning the corners so both pieces move together usually stops it.
Can you put baseboard back after my new floor?
Yes. That's a common call. If the old baseboard was damaged coming off, we replace it to match.
